Major Civil Engineering
Class of 2009
Hometown Jasper, IN
Co-op Experience My first co-op was with a large general contractor, Bovis Lend Lease in Boone, NC. Boone is home to Appalachian State University and I was working on campus as my company was building a new precast concrete parking garage and renovating a few of their science buildings. I mostly reviewed shop drawings, handled as-built corrections, and learned how contractors meet their contract requirements by managing their sub-contractors. My second and third co-ops have been with Otak, Inc. in Kirkland, Washington just across Lake Washington from Seattle. Otak is a general civil company meaning they do all the designing and management of projects. My first term with them I was working with the Development Services department obtaining building code information for projects and designing grading and utility placements for new and existing projects. This summer I’ve switched departments to Transportation Public Services and will get to work on roadway projects.
About Me I’m from a small rural town in southern Indiana and I’m pretty much into most things outdoor. I spent a lot of time working on my grandpa and uncle’s farm so I’m a bit redneck compared to my friends. When I get to go home (IN) I enjoy hunting, fishing, or hanging out with my dad in the shop. While in Washington last year I started a new, unique hobby in mountain climbing and alpine mountaineering. I’ve created a new life goal of summiting the highest point in each state. Last year I got my first, at the end of co-op I took a vacation to climb Mt. Rainier nearby. If you’ve seen pictures of Seattle and a mountain in the back, that’s Rainier. At 14,411 ft. its the second highest in the lower 48 states, so I got off to a high summit start for my journey.
